I patted my lap. “Come sit with me,” I crooned.
“No.”
I sighed and picked my phone back up, looking at the recipe again. “This has a lot of dried fruit in it,” I observed.
“That’s like tuna?” he asked.
“No,” I said. “It’s like dried fruit. You wouldn’t like it,” I added.
“What if you made it with crunchy treats?” he asked.
“Mmm...I don’t think that would work. The dried fruit needs to be soaked overnight in rum or brandy.”
“You should use catnip tea.”
“That won’t work,” I said.
“I need to buy the dried fruit ahead of time because it has to soak the night before I bake the cake. Then I’ll need to brush it with liquor a few times before Christmas.” I looked up at Freddie. “This is a very involved cake.”
“Why bother?”
“It’s a Christmas thing,” I said with a shrug. “And I’ve never made one before but I’ve wanted to for a while.”
“And humans like to eat them?”
“Ummm...not really? They’ve become kind of a joke for being gross. But I think I’ll like this.”
“If humans don’t want to eat this then you should make it with things cats like to eat.”
I frowned. “Why?”
“So I can eat it.”
"You have an entire advent calendar full of treats that you refuse to eat,” I said, rolling my eyes. I had bought the 25 days of treats gift box in a fit of optimism, but I should have known better. Freddie only likes one kind of treat.
“Those aren’t treats,” he said confidently. “Those must be dried fruit. You should put those in the cake.”
I shook my head. “I need some coffee,” I said, rolling out bed and walking toward the kitchen. I heard a light thump as Freddie followed.
I fixed my coffee as Freddie wound his body around my legs. “You’ve already had breakfast,” I murmured.
“You should make me some cat cake,” he said.
“There probably won’t be a cat cake,” I said, trying to let him down gently. “I’ll make some cookies though.”
“I can eat cookies?”
“No.”
He bumped the back of my leg with his head, hard.
My knee buckled and I grabbed the counter to keep myself from falling.
Sitting on the couch where I was in no danger of being tripped by a cat, I flipped through a cookbook and sipped my coffee. Freddie sat next to me, carefully grooming his belly fur.
“I need to make gifts for the neighbors,” I explained, reading the ingredients list on a nice looking cookie. “The trick is to find recipes that are similar enough that I don’t have to buy a lot of ingredients, but diverse enough to make a satisfying gift.”
“Just catch a bird and leave it on their porch,” he said between licks of his fur.
“That sounds terrible,” I said.
I made a mental list of things I would need to buy for my baking projects and planned out a rough schedule. “I’ll need to make the fruitcake this weekend,” I told Freddie. “The cookies can wait until the week after next. Christmas is a busy time.”
“Just make sure I’m fed regularly,” Freddie responded.
“I will.”
“And that you fill my treat snowman toy.”
I looked over at it. “Right now?”
He flipped over and stood up.
“I guess that’s a ‘yes’,” I said, reaching for it.
I closed the cookbook and set it aside to watch Freddie as he rolled his snowman around on the floor and ate the treats that fell out. I looked sadly at his advent calendar. “Do you want to try these treats again?”
He ignored me, busy with his snowman.
“Let’s just hope the neighbors like their treats more than you do.”
Happy Caturday, Peeps! It’s that part of the season that’s mostly about prepping for the big day. Freddie and I are ready.
