Welcome to the December 3rd edition of Street Prophets Coffee Hour, where politics meets up with religion, art, nature, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!) and join us.
In English, the word December is the “tenth month.” And no, it isn’t that someone’s math was really, really bad back when they were assigning names. It’s those two pesky extra months stuck in the middle of the summer that threw everything off from September on. (I’m not doing a long-distance, long-time psych diagnosis of a couple of certain Roman emperors. I’m just saying.)
The Scottish Gaelic name for December, though, is An Dubhlachd: The Black Month. Oh, I understand this! Someone was very, very accurate in naming this month black.
We’ve already had winter weather here, a wee bit earlier than usual. Often it doesn’t snow until well into December, and we wonder if we’ll have the White Christmas that’s in so many songs. This year, snow was heavy enough, and it was cold enough, that we’ve had measurable snow on the ground three times already, with more forecast before the winter holidays. Brrr!
