Happy Friday beer fans! Come in and have a cold one with us!

Sorry to have spaced last week. On Friday afternoon while I should have been writing this, I was drinking with friends at Blue Oak Brewing in San Carlos CA, which I hadn’t heard of before then. They have a nice selection of beers and do several trendy styles well, I liked the fruit sours and a hazy IPA as well as a satisfying non-exotic pale ale. They’re in an industrial area and you approach down an alley lined with “no brewery parking” signs. If you happen to be near San Carlos you should also know about Ale Arsenal, a first class beer bar that’s downtown near the nice restaurants.

Beer news: someone isn’t selling out! Kern River brewing is moving to employee ownership!

The day before Thanksgiving, the Giddens family announced that Kern River Brewing, its award-winning and beloved microbrewery and restaurant that abuts the banks of the Kern River in the southern Sierra Nevada town of Kernville, would become 100% employee-owned. Though the announcement was a surprise to those it will benefit most, it’s a move the owners say they’ve been working on for more than two years… The process of turning a company owned by a single owner or an LLC into one that is owned wholly by the folks who run it is “as difficult and challenging as anything we’ve ever done,” Eric [Giddens] said, “and I feel like we’ve done a lot.”

[I like how SFGate puts this under the “Central Coast” heading, when Kernville is in the Sierras closer to Nevada than to the ocean.]

I’ve got “Cowboy Camp” Hazy IPA from Headlands Brewing, Pittsburg CA. It’s heavy on the fruit-flavor hops and I probably won’t buy more; not unpleasant but not what I want. Celebration Ale after this.

What are you drinking? Anyone brewing?
