Salad Days

Y’all know how entranced I am with Jessica Seinfeld’s cookbook Food Swings. I have made many of her recipes and they all work perfectly as long as you follow the recipe exactly. A few decades ago I started cooking from John Ash’s From the Earth to the Table. This has become a classic for many people and it’s full of fabulous and sometimes intricate recipes. The old standby, of course, is Joy of Cooking. It has everything one needs for food preparation, info for beginners and ideas for experienced cooks as well. We have a newer edition plus we kept an older one because recipes are dropped as new ones are added. One may still need the recipe for possum, not found in the new edition.

John Ash really defined the local food scene years ago, with a weekly radio show and one of the top restaurants in Santa Rosa (still here, though John doesn’t cook there anymore). I took four cooking classes from him, great fun and he’s the nicest guy ever. He once stated that if you love only 3 recipes in a cookbook, it’s worth keeping. I feel he’s a local hero.

Not just local. He wrote the MEAT section for Joy of Cooking!

We’ve been having stunning salads lately. Here is a recent one that was more than satisfactory:
