I went to the estate sale without wanting to buy anything.
Mr A****** died recently, and his wife was selling things before moving to Utah to live with her son and his family.
Their house was nice. I always wondered what it looked like inside.
I was in the garage when the son said, "Do you now anything about guns?" Then he showed me five Sig Sauers and Walthers. I said they were worth about $500 to $800 each retail. Some were worth more than others. I liked a couple of models. I decided to offer him $2K for all five. He eagerly agreed. We live in Az and I need nothing more. I bought them.
On Nov 29th , I took photos and serial numbers into the local police station.
I asked to speak with someone who could help me.
The lady at the front desk said “No one else is here.”
There were others in the back of the room.
I explained, I would like these serial numbers run so I could rest assured their provenance was clean.
The person at the desk refused to call any one else to the front desk. She said "There is no law that says we have to run the serial numbers for you." I asked, "Would you do it as a courtesy? Would you as our public servant?" She went off the rails, "We are not going to run serial numbers for anyone. There is no law that says we have to...”
Again, I asked for someone who had the authority of the department. She refused.
She went on to add, "We need the guns in our possession if we do decide to run them, so we can immediately confiscate them,..."
I asked if there was a national data base that we could check?
She looked at me like I was speaking Chinese.
She then stated, "Go to the Sheriff's Office." Ask them what you are asking me. If you do not get out of the lobby I will call an officer up here and trespass you. Then we will ID you and get your address to get the guns. "
I left the building.
I now know why police in the USA are so distrusted.
