An immodest proposal: should the Dems now negotiate to make Previous Guy the House Speaker simply for the lulz, because he’s decompensating, Bigly. The GOP needs to be messed with, especially now that Trump demands that judges be more corrupt.

In an earlier diatribe, he accused Jack Smith as being a "hit man for Obama, Eric Holder, and Andrew Weissman." (?) According to the former president, judges appointed by Democrats spend their careers showing fealty toward the party that elevated them. Trump complained on Truth Social: Many Republican Judges go out of their way to show they are beyond reproach, & will come down hard on people before them in order to prove they cannot be “bought” or in any way show favor to those who appointed them. People, including me, are oftentimes shocked by the lack of courage and wisdom shown. As soon as they get appointed, they go “ROGUE!” Democrat Judges are the exact opposite in attitude – Screw you, this guy appointed me, I’m a Democrat all they way, you don’t have a chance. Of course there’s so much that suggests Trump would never take the Speaker’s job or even get that far because he would hate the actual work even as he’d think he could impeach Biden and direct all kinds of committee appointment chaos in hopes of having a second shot at a January 6 sedition in 2025. Speakers of the House have been indicted.
Dems would think it an abrogation of their responsibility but the trial balloon of supporting Trump as Speaker in the short run would perhaps make Kevin McCarthy’s head explode amid the GOP infighting, making a potential 2024 Dem landslide.
Plan B could always be the Dem support of some “moderate”(sic) Republican.
What would the Dems want in return for such support: M4A: medicare for all, a 50% cut in the DoD budget, and a vote to stop Trump from ever being constitutionally eligible to run for POTUS, since he’s going to get indicted before the 2024 election.
If every Democrat were to back a more centrist Republican, only five Republicans would need to vote with them for that candidate to win. This is all, of course, idle speculation. It is hard to imagine who could get all 212 Democrats to sign off on this wacky idea — especially as their current leader, Nancy Pelosi, is a self-created lame duck. Although, what a great coda it would be to her remarkable career. The biggest hurdle is that you would have to find a Republican candidate. I do not know the GOP House membership well enough to hazard a guess which Republican would have the gravity to anchor the strategy. And they would have to find a candidate capable of standing the hate from the base and its attendant flame-fanners — like Gaetz. Is this scenario likely? Probably not. It would require an audacity that politicians comfortable in their lane are unlikely to show. In all likelihood, Kevin will realize his life's ambition, even if he has to beg like a bitch. But if Gaetz stays true to his word (and I will grant you that is a long shot for a conservative) it could make for strange bedfellows. The Constitution does not specify that the speaker of the House must be a member of Congress, so Trump wouldn’t even need to run for office in 2022 to be a potential speaker candidate. If a majority of House members voted to support his speakership, it’s possible he could serve in that role. A Democratic congressman introduced a bill in July to restrict the speaker’s position to elected members, but the bill only has three co-sponsors. Trump so far hasn’t said much about the possibility beyond acknowledging that people are talking about it. In a July interview with Real America’s Voice host David Brody said that he’d “heard the talk and it’s getting more and more, but it’s not something that I would have considered.” He had addressed the prospect earlier that month on far-right host Wayne Allyn Root’s radio show, calling it an “interesting” idea. “People have said, run for the Senate, OK, run for the Senate,” Trump said. “But you know what, your idea might be better.
