Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano, roared back to life after 40 years or dormancy last night in Hawaii. The eruption started around 11:30 pm hst (4:30 am est) and is still apparently confined to the summit caldera, though quite visible in the nighttime sky from most of the Big Island. Aside from ash and VOG, it poses no immediate danger to people there, but if it starts to migrate into the SW Rift Zone, it could potentially threaten the communities of Ocean View and/or Captain Cook south of Kona.
