In the mid-1950s my Father took our family on a tour around the U.S., ostensibly to see his old Army buddies. We left San Jose with my Father, mother, two sisters, a brother AND a pleasant to be around Grandfather.
I was watching 60 minutes last night and as part of the segment, the producers showed the sign depicted above. That sign and every other sign with similar language have been indelibly etched into my soul.
I come from a ‘broken’ family. My maternal grandparents are from the Carolinas and all that has to bring — and my mother brought it spades. I vividly remember my Father coming down the stairs, crying because Bobby Kennedy had been assassinated the evening before. My mother yelling back at him — ‘why are you crying over that n-word lover?
On the other hand, we had stopped at a community swimming in Texas. The pool was segregated and there was a small group of black kids hanging around not being able to swim, because, well — they were black. My Grandfather, a pensioner who didn’t toss his money around easily, gathered the black kids and bought them all an ice cream cone. My Father was much more like my Grandfather than my mother.
I could handle the bigotry of my mother by simply ignoring her. Can’t do that with Tr**p sharing ice cream with the bigotry of Ye and Nick Fuentes. This hatred of anything not white or christian or male is going to infect MY country for a while.
Speak up — if only not to laugh at a racist joke — even if your boss is doing the joke telling. Speak up.
