Waiting for the 1/6 committee’s final flourishes, let’s bear in mind how, these days as in Jonathan Swift’s, “Falsehood flies, and the truth comes limping after it, so that when [and if] men come to be undeceived, it [may be] too late.”

From Day One, Donald Trump telegraphed cataclysm. Not to demand anything so extravagant as basic competence, but newsies and donkeys alike should have known better than to let an oft-bankrupt scion of great wealth peg himself “a self-made billionaire” who “alone” could solve our problems.

In 2016, while lauding Vladimir Putin as “strong” and hence good, he smeared President Barack Obama as “weak” and therefore bad. Absurdly claiming he could force Mexico to pay for a wall it did not want, he epitomized what autocracy guru Ruth Ben-Ghiat called “the strongman’s playbook.”

Dems were thrown for a loop. Trump effectively knotted it into a noose, thereby turning Capitol Hill into Boot Hill. While his party/cult painted such stuff “legitimate political discourse,” the committee began to delve. At the time, former GOP chair Michael Steele observed “Democrats don’t do that kind of thing [accountability] well.”

Or do they? Granted, they’ve unearthed troves of detail. But in no small measure, their thunder was stolen a priori. Live and in our faces, we saw not so much a smoking gun as a billowing missile silo. So let’s face it. When you’ve seen and heard a bitterly self-entitled loser urge militia mobs to “go to the Capitol….to take back our (sic) country,” it’s not exactly eye-popping to discover he twirled his thumbs while they did his bidding.

This was not business-as-usual. As author/podcaster Sarah Kendzior points out, never has a coup attempt against a democratic government failed without its leader(s) being rounded up forthwith. But not only has Trump kept his freedom; he’s gone on to hold rallies where he’s sought to incite more violence- including one this past March, in Florence, South Carolina, where he urged his faithful to “lay down their very lives” for his cause.

In a two-party system, nice pols tend to finish second- technically, not last. But that should give cold comfort. As our sole non-despotic major, Dems ought to be shouting the basic truth about their foes to the heavens, in hopes it may sprout wings. To leap from Swift to Winston Churchill, we’ve put our heads in the mouth of a large and ravenous tiger. We cannot negotiate. We cannot canoodle. Better late than never, we must fight for our lives as best we can.
