Notice the irony printed on the Spokesman Review’s front page on Sunday, October 16th? The top article is entitled, “Three sites proposed for dog park”. Below this headline is a picture of a homeless couple near their tent and belongings who are moving from Camp Hope. Having unhoused people is appalling, especially when millions of dollars are available in Spokane.

At the risk of ire from dog-loving Americans, I wonder if citizens ask themselves if dogs are more important than people? Imagine WSU is researching cancer in dogs, and TV advertises nutritious dog food. A family member from Southern California has rich friends whose families arrange a service to drive their dogs to doggy daycare, and there are even dog psychotherapists. Some families turn on their TV when they are gone, so the dog doesn’t get bored or become lonely. When a police dog retires or dies, we hear all about it on the local news. Zoom meetings are peppered with pet antics or what some call distractions. Imagine, 53 dogs are transported by plane from the Southern Border to Wisconsin regularly to be adopted.

Many people bring their dogs to the most awkward situations – not recognizing some people don’t like dogs; some may be afraid of them; some may be allergic to dogs, some dogs may have diseases, some may poop desecrating parks and sidewalks, and there may be conflicts and fights with other dogs. Yes some get off their leashes or run away and attack and kill children and adults.

Shouldn’t we get our priorities straight and care more for our fellow human beings?
