Yeah, I got it. And it really sucks.

I read in the media that today’s dominant variants are more easily caught but less debilitating that the original. Couldn’t tell by me. Aching everything, even knuckles. Heck, my eyeballs hurt. Hacking, phlemolicious cough, fever. Ugh with a capital Uh.

Here’s the thing: I’m pretty darned careful. Everyone I’ve been calling because I’ve been in contract with them says, “But you mask everywhere.” And they’re right. Mostly.

Monday, I was at an old friend’s house, someone as meticulous about protocols as I. I generally do not wear a mask in his house. Sure wish I had. While I was there, some friends came over. I made some politenesses and vamoosed. Should have done it sooner.

One of those friends, apparently got fever and aches on Wednesday. Like I got on Friday. He has, apparently, tested negative since, but I suspect the timing was too late to register.

I could go on at length on symptomatic details, but just getting up to my desk and typing this is a serious effort. Just trust me: It’s not “easier” than “old Covid.” It’s quite debilitating, and I don’t really have any underlying health issues to complicate it. It sucks quite impressively all on its own.

So, listen to your old Vor on this one. Stay masked, even around trusted friends and loved ones, unless you’ve personally watched them spin the swabs and get negative results.

“Pretty darned careful” isn’t enough. “Mostly” is mostly useless. Verb sap.
