My Idea of a Dream Come True is Justice Done [1]

I’ve come here to talk about a persistent Un-Jedi mind trick I’ve seen going around Daily Kos and other political blog discussions. It’s been put most succinctly by this LA Times Article by writer George Skelton in the title of an article. It says: ”Trump running in 2024 is a dream come true for Democrats. The underlying premise of this article: that the Former Guy will still be around in two years to be the Republican candidate, and, in fact, this would be a wonderful thing. I reject the premise. It’s an attempt to control the narrative by starting with “when Trump runs…” and let folks argue from there. Of course, Donald Trump announcing his candidacy now, now, so far ahead of 2024, is because he knows this trick. It keeps popping up in discussions and cartoons, and I want to make the case here that no one should applaud this, or “buy into it.”.

“Looking past the sale” is a well-known sales technique. When a couple comes onto a car lot, the salesman will chat with them for a while. If he can’t see their car, he finds out what they drive now. Let’s say the car they are looking at has a hatch back and bigger trunk space. He moves the conversation past the sale. He asks the man to envision going on a vacation trip with more easily accessible trunk space for luggage. He asks the woman to to imagine how grocery shopping would be easier with a hatch door that opens with the push of a button on the key fob! In this political exercise, we are asked to move past any indictments and move to “when Donald Trump runs”. It’s a sales trick.

What about the risk? Donald Trump broke the law in broad daylight. Won’t he just continue? There is no huge benefit to the country be had by allowing a criminal to evade justice, and then even run for the presidency again. Are we to be ruled by criminals? Whether you thought President Kennedy really brought “the best and the brightest” to Washington, you had to like that as a stated goal, not “He does crimes and gets away with it!” Trump sent armed thugs to the Capitol to overthrow the peaceful counting of electoral votes. He stole classified documents. He has not changed. The thugs await their orders. This election, he worked through proxies and the thugs worked with them (Note that Election Official William “Bill” Gates of Maricopa County, AZ, had to go into hiding: https://www.businessinsider.com/az-election-official-hiding-over-threats-kari-lake-refuses-concede-2022-11 ) In fact, the failure of the DOJ to charge Donald Trump with inciting a riot, and/or stealing classified documents has made him and his thugs more bold.

The lure of this trick is the pleasure of defeating Donald Trump once again, but who can guarantee that? Do we know what tricks his campaign strategists have developed? We don’t. What we can know from watching the 2020 and the 2022 elections is that even a defeat will not bring an end to these attacks on democracy. There is only one way to stop this injustice.

My idea of a dream come true is justice done. The people must demand action. And well before “when Trump runs…”
