It seems to me Zuck might be destroying virtual reality, just as he wants it to be the core of Meta. [1]

All the news about Meta, which is what Mark Zuckerberg calls Facebook now, has been about his “vision” to be the leader in the next generation of “computing”, by integrating virtual reality into it.

As a retired technical illustrator and computer graphics programmer, who decided in 2021 that virtual reality is finally ready for prime time, it looks like he might be destroying it before he can integrate it into anything!

I bought the state of the art virtual reality headset that year, the Oculus Quest 2.

Oculus was started by Google, who I generally respect, but was acquired by Facebook, who I always hated.

I spent the $300 for the Quest 2 anyway, hoping for the best.

I was pleased mainly but not completely, until this year.

Technical problems caused by software updates began about a year ago, exactly the time Meta was announced. Coincidence?

Well… I have a keen sense of when tech support seems to be AWOL in response to glitches, and I sense now that glitches are steadily getting worse with my Quest 2 and that tech support to fix the mess is definitely inadequate or nonexistent. I will not go into the details, but I am beginning to think the word “meltdown”!

I think the users of Oculus headsets are probably going to revolt if this continues. There is panic among some of them. I, personally, think I have lost HALF of the utility that the headset had when I bought it, due to the new glitches, which are NOT being fixed, and which Meta gives no sign of intending to fix. That is a very big deal!

Where has the talent gone, that should be improving the performance of Rift, Quest, and Quest 2, rather than degrading it?

I have my theory…

Zuckerberg has probably stupidly moved them all to the next big thing, the Oculus Pro, which will cost five times what the Quest 2 did, if it works at all.

I always thought Facebook was a joke, from the very beginning, and called it Farcebook, and avoided it like the plague. Now the whole world, except for old people putting grandkid pics online, and purveyors of nonsense, know Facebook always was a farce.

Should we have expected the creator of this wasteland to carefully handle the majority of virtual reality, which he bought, so he could build a new “metaverse” around it?

No.

And now it appears he might be destroying it, so he will need to wrap it in newspaper, not a metaverse, and then throw it in the garbage. I am about to throw my Quest 2 in the garbage, now that it is becoming more useless everyday, apparently because of Meta!
