Thomas Nast welcomes immigrants to the Thanksgiving table and the United States. Nast was an immigrant from Germany.

Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was the most prominent American illustrator in the middle of the 19th century. Nast, who was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States a a child, was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery, citizenship rights for African Americans, and welcoming immigrants to the United States. His major blind spot was his anti-Irish and anti-Catholic cartoons. “Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner” was published in Harper’s Weekly in 1869. Sitting at Nast’s Thanksgiving dinner table while Uncle Sam carves the turkey are Lady Columbia, an early iteration of Lady Liberty, and two dozen people from all over the world. Thanksgiving has a long history in the United States dating back to the Pilgrim colony in Massachusetts. Abraham Lincoln declared it a day of national commemoration in 1863. It became an official national holiday in November 1941 just before United States entry into World War 2. The Gimbel Brothers Department Store in Philadelphia sponsored the first Thanksgiving Parade in 1920. The first Macy’s Thanksgiving parade was in 1924. With tension about documented and undocumented immigrants to the United States today, it is important to remember the inclusive vision of Thomas Nast’s Thanksgiving table.
