Republicans, Fear the Young is the title of an Op-Ed in the New York Times by John Della Volpe, director of polling at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics.
Why?
Young people voted overwhelmingly for Democrats in the midterm elections. In three critical Senate races, young people 18-19-years-old chose the Democratic candidate by margins ranging from 32 to 56 points.:
NYT, citing exit polls
Della Volpe write:
Stressed and sickened by thoughts of their rights and democracy slipping away, young Americans across gender, racial, geographic and education lines banded together last week to help save the Democrats from what many foresaw as a sizable midterm defeat.
More facts from the article:
18-29 year olds will represent 40% of the electorate in 2024
Though a majority of whites over 30 voted R for the House, 58% of whites under 30 voted D, a ten point swing for Democrats for this group compared with 2022.
59% of young Americans believe their rights are being attacked and 73% percent fear the rights of others are threatened.
But wait, there’s more:
Young voter turnout of 27% was the second highest in three decades, according to Tufts University’s Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE)
But turnout was even higher in battleground states: CIRCLE also estimates that in nine of these (FL, GA, MI, NC, NH, NV, OH, PA, WI), the aggregate youth voter turnout was 31%.
It’s the Registration, Stupid
27% is the percentage turnout of eligible voters. The percentage turnout of registered voters is almost certain to be more than twice that amount, based on prior elections:
There is tremendous room for growth on registration and that should be a number one priority.
Shortly after the election, a recommended diary, About those stories that young voters saved Democrats, cast doubt on the effect of the youth vote. But the results described above show young voters did save Democrats, and continued effort has a good chance of producing blue waves for years to come.
Here are three groups working to activate the youth vote:
