Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) and Tom Hudner (Glenn Powell) in the movie Devotion.
A few weeks ago, I went to the AMC Fairlane 21 in Dearborn, I wanted to see Top Gun: Maverick beginning to end with no interruptions (long story as to why I didn’t see it in its entirety the first time).
It was a pleasant surprise that Tom Cruise recorded a special message for moviegoers that is played before the movie proper. For that second viewing, I was in Theater 3 by myself except for one other person.
Then there was a brief power outage. Most of the movies were resumed, but not Top Gun. I guess they figured it wasn’t worth it for two customers who paid for early afternoon tickets. Speaking only for myself, I wasn’t interested in any of the other movies showing at the time, so they gave me a coupon for a free ticket.
Maybe I’ll use my free ticket for that movie Devotion, it looks very interesting. I thought I’d go see it at the AMC Fairlane 21 on Black Friday if not today. Except I can’t. According to the pertinent page on the AMC Theatres website, the AMC Fairlane 21 is permanently closed.
Now they want me to go to the AMC Star Gration 15, which is a longer drive by ten minutes, and in the opposite direction. The AMC Star John R 15 is actually closer to me than the Gratiot.
What? When did this happen? It seems to have been kind of a sudden decision made last week. Emma Stein for the Detroit Free Press:
The AMC Fairlane 21, located in the Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn, has permanently closed. Sunday was the theater's last day of operation, said AMC spokesperson Ryan Noonan in an email to the Free Press. "AMC regularly evaluates its locations and potential opportunities outside of its circuit, and makes decisions to close or acquire locations on a theatre-by-theatre basis based on what will best strengthen the company going forward," Noonan said. He noted that all "impacted associates" were offered jobs at other locations. Dan Fayad, Fairlane Town Center's general manager, said in an email to the Free Press that the theater had not been renovated since 1999, and some guests said they would have preferred a more modern look.
Like maybe the AMC Fairlane 21 has electrical problems? Maybe that was a consideration.
Whatever the reasons, the result is that there are now fewer movie theaters close to Detroit. There is precisely only one movie theater in the city proper, with only four screens and currently only showing two movies (Triangle of Sadness and Bad Axe).
Here is some information about movies coming out today, in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. I think two or three of these should have a review here on Daily Kos. If you write a movie about any of these movies, or any other movies, please send a message to the Movie Review Group so we can reblog it.
All the Beauty and the Bloodshed — A documentary about photographer Nan Goldin. New York only.
Bones and All — Horror movie about a young woman who is a cannibal and falls in love with a drifter.
Christmas on Mistletoe Farm — Netflix. Need I say anything else about this one?
Devotion — “Inspired by the incredible true story” of Jesse Brown, the first black aviator in the U. S. Navy. Starring Jonathan Majors as Brown, and Glenn Powell, whom you might remember from Top Gun: Maverick, as Brown’s wingman.
I think I’ve watched every episode of Black Sheep Squadron. Only two black people appear in the entire run of that show, and they seem to be servants to an eccentric Englishman (Peter Frampton). So, to see a Corsair piloted by a black man seemed like a strange anachronism to me.
But it really did happen. During World War II, some enlisted black men served aboard the USS Mason. After that war, the Navy stepped up efforts to desegregate, but Jesse Brown still endured a lot of racism. In the sky, he was a hero, but at the officers’ club he was regarded as an impostor.
Devotion takes place at the beginning of the Korean War.
I definitely want a review of this one.
The Fabelmans — Steven Spielberg’s Ein Heldenleben? I don’t know. Maybe I’ll wait for the DVD/BluRay. For what it’s worth, it’s designated “an AMC Artisan Film.”
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery — Daniel Craig reprises his rôle from the first Knives Out movie. Limited release.
Good Night Oppy — This is actually a documentary about Opportunity, a Mars rover intended for a 90-day mission that wound up operating on the red planet for a decade and a half. Amazon PrimeVideo only.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover — A faithful adaptation of the classic D. H. Lawrence novel. Too faithful, says at least one critic. Limited release.
Nanny — A woman from Senegal is hired as a nanny for an affluent New York couple. Forced to leave her son behind, she works to bring him to America, but that might not be what’s best for him. Limited release, hope someone here can review it.
The Swimmers — Biopic about Yusra Mardini, an Olympic athlete who helped refugees cross the Aegean Sea to escape a war.
Should definitely have a Daily Kos review. Select theaters and Netflix.
