The new VA-98 district from the 2021 elections to now has jumped 11% towards democrats. Judging by past elections this seat has just become more vulnerable than ever. I wonder if its mostly post-Dobbs voters, young voters, and/or voters realizing their current representation is not looking out for their best interests, but regardless we have a real opportunity to take one more seat in the 100 person VA House of Delegates. Most polls predict a 50-50 split in the state house with a slight democratic majority in the state senate, if we win an unexpected seat that has just shifted from Strong R to Lean R territory we could not only be electing our first Gen Z candidate, but we could secure a majority in both legislatures.
Obviously going against an incumbent with some of the deepest pockets in the house is an uphill battle, but as it stands I already have more individual donors than he received his entire last election cycle. The difference between Barry Knight and I is that he no longer needs approval from his community, he just needs to continue to impress the elites who bankroll him. This election is a millionaire vs. a student on a pell grant, it’s no question only one of us has the capabilities of grassroots organizing.
Now that the midterms are over and we have finally begun reaching out to voters and introducing our 2023 campaign, we have begun setting our clear goals that lead us to a path to victory. If every voter that voted in the midterms showed up in this race we will demolish my long term opponent. I think having a bright energy and new perspective for the community can get us there. Special issues to my community like protecting workers and labor rights, fully legalizing cannabis, and ensure we don’t see increased commercialization in rural areas are not being properly taken care of with our current representation, and I know folks will be looking to support the only person in the race who will fight for these things, we just need to introduce ourselves to them.
I know a lot of times it seems like after the mid terms we get a break of campaigns blowing up our messages and urging folks to make a voting plan, but in Virginia the grind cannot, doesn’t, and won’t stop. Help me make this the highest turnout in an off year election ever, and shatter just a few more records before my campaign is done by contributing using my ActBlue linked below. Gen Z is just beginning to enter the political space, and not even all of us can vote yet, but it’s time to earn our seat at the table.
