For several months Putin has been holding the world hostage on several fronts and one of them is the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Putin had is forces invade the facility and convert it into a military base for storage of munition and equipment. In addition, he has alternately switched power on and off to distract from the horrific crimes his forces are committing across Ukraine daily. Russia’s Rosatom is considered the operator of the plant, presently has 19 rectors under contract around the world.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its members should decertify Rosatom as a trusted contractor for the installation and operation of nuclear power plants and require them to recertify their policies and practices in order to proceed with the contracts they have in hand. Any such recertification would include a review of Rosatom handling of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This obviously would be a serious interruption of 19 projects under way around the world, but ending Putin ability to threaten to weaponize such facilities at will is worth the delay.
