Fact: Twitter has been a vital resource for people wanting to get the truth out about everything from bad governments to bad corporations, to the point where there’s a sound theory going around that Musk bought Twitter in order to destroy it.

So why not build a public utility version of Twitter, run by the government? Yes, I can already hear the objections. But a) It can be done, and right away — there’s a lot of ex-Twitter employees looking for work right now, and Mastodon is available. Also b) with the right man appointed director for life, and fact-checkers that cannot be fired for fact-checking, I believe that a new system would be viable and, in time, trusted.
