Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. This is a post where you can come to share what’s on your mind and stay for the expansion. The diarist is on California time and gets to take a nap when he needs to, or may just wander off and show up again later. So you know, it's a feature, not a bug. Grab your supportive indulgence(s) of choice and join us, please. And if you’re brand new to Morning Open Thread, then Hail and Well Met, new Friend.

There’s no need to remind you, this Thursday is Thanksgiving. Unless you’re lucky enough to have found a tiny turkey this year you should probably stick your bird in the fridge about now. According to our local ag reports the dreaded bird flu also hit turkey flocks. Their prices weren’t as bad as I expected. I paid $.99 per pound for mine. That was my grocer’s sale, though.

Every year I feel like a glutton for buying a turkey for myself and myself alone. For one, I break my rules of vegetarianism. But, hey, tradition. And there are so many dishes that call for leftover turkey I can chop it, portion it and freeze it. One bird will keep me in dinners with turkey chunks for several months.

All my sides are the same every year—stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie, all that. I don’t know why I don’t make them any other time of year. Probably because I link them so much with Thanksgiving they’re almost sacred to me.

Do you have any Thanksgiving traditions? I do. Every year, no matter how closely I watch my kitty Hector, he jumps up on the table, grabs a turkey leg and shoots under my bed or somewhere equally inaccessible. This makes my other kitties Creampuff and Olivia look at me as if I’m betraying them by playing favorites. It’s not that turkey meat is the worst protein source for Hector with his renal failure. It’s that I don’t need a turkey leg rotting under my bed where I can’t reach it. I may just put the bird back in the still warm oven after I’ve taken my serving.

So what are all your Thanksgiving plans this year? Are you eating at home or are you going out? Someone else’s house or a restaurant? Do tell.

Is classical Music’s not your thing? If not, I offer this other Thanksgiving classic:
