RIP Old Friend

There were actually two accounts I had to put to sleep. One was a gift from my techie friend who got it all together to surprise me, insisted this was “the next big thing”, and that I had to get one because everybody else would be doing it. Whenever I hear that sort of reasoning my mind goes back to my childhood when I literally jumped off a bridge because all the other kids were doing it, tearing my foot open from some sharp junk on the bottom of the river. I also recall hearing a similar argument about CD’s, and tiny cellphones, the smaller the better (that were subsequently replaced by large cellphones, I think, but I might have already missed everyone going back to tiny ones again). Oh, and Sweet Caroline at ballgames. And Mumford & Sons.

That first account is an old bugger now in Twitter years, birthed somewhere around early 2007, so it survived to the ripe old age of fifteen, with maybe twenty Tweets tops over that time period. Thing is, it never seemed right from the beginning, didn’t get along well with my other devices, like my email, which allowed me to write as long as I wanted. My Twitter tired easily, and was exhausted after only 140 characters. Amazing that it lasted as long as it did really.

Then about seven years ago I tried to get with the program and accepted another Twitter account into my life. This one would be sturdier, a workhorse that, in tandem with a new website would exist purely for business use. It actually did get a lot done for me, keeping up with my music business contacts, entering my writing work in contests, giving me a way to send out remarks about current events and so on. It was hardy, and would go out into an increasingly dangerous world unabashedly and bring me back videos and commentary that were useful and entertaining.

At first.

But things got worse and worse, and eventually it was bringing things back to the house that I never would have accepted under any circumstance, ugly foul smelling things, and soon there was no telling what I would find on my doorstep.

This weekend things went too far. There was a wolf that, despite a sturdy fence around my property I had earlier found prowling around in my garage and was forced to kill with a shovel and bury in the woods. My Twitter dug up the carcass and brought the thing right into my bedroom and dropped it at the foot of my bed.

That was the final straw.

Goodbye Twitter.
