I found that odd title question while doing a search for NASA citizen science projects. Science teachers, you have some work to do. Although, yes, if you were “in a galaxy far, far away”, and had access to a James Webb equivalent telescope there, you might be able to point it to Earth and see light that had come from here 70 million years ago, so I guess it would be possible in theory. I doubt the resolution would be sufficient to see that kind of surface detail, but who knows what those space aliens are up to?

But there are citizen science projects you can do for NASA, some of them from the comfort of your own computer. The list is here. They don’t all involve searching NASA photos, which is good since my eyes have never worked well after my eye surgeries. If your vision is better, you can see what you can do with those zillions of space photos that NASA doesn’t have time or personnel to scan. That’s what Judy Schmidt did with photos from the still-functioning Hubble telescope, and it led to co-authoring a report with top scientists.

Many of the projects are student- and family-friendly, too. It’s a chance to engage the young people in your life, and show them how individual people can make a difference in some of our biggest challenges.

And while you’re here, visit this week’s Community Needs List. And the Kos Katalogue, where you can get a start on holiday shopping.

These are some of the first pictures from the James Webb telescope, all from NASA so all in public domain.
