Good afternoon, everyone.

I'm going to ask the titular question but with more inclusion:

Why do Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian characters in the science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres upset you?

Why are people upset with a Black woman playing the part of the Little Mermaid? Why are people upset with A powerful Black man in the House of the Dragons?

I ask this because I remember Isaac Asimov's writings being revered as a kid but not his behavior.

I remember the science fiction, horror, and fantasy communities not being open to the likes of Black women writing characters with a backstory and addressing social issues like Octavia Butler, Tananarive Due, Nnedi Okorafor, Nalo Hopkinson, N. K. Jemisin, along with Walter Mosely.

I have a few thoughts on why it’s upsetting to see more Black, Indigenous, Brown, and Asian characters in science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres.

The writing is exceptional, especially in addressing social issues, character development, and plot.

There is a need for representation to be met.

The authors are men and women in those communities writing these stories, shows, books, and plays with empathy, not some two-dimensional tropes with no development.

Instead of complaining about why there are Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian characters in the science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres, please celebrate why the stories were written or rewritten.
