The Vranov Chateau has a nice website for those interested in more info than I’m presenting here.

The Virgin Mary peeking around the gatehouse.

I did poke my nose into a couple of areas that were open. Here’s a display of items that were found during a recent reconstruction of the loft and attic spaces of the chateau.

One of the locals having a nap in the garden

Nice view of the town from up here.

The inner courtyard

While the others went for ice cream, I discovered a cellar gallery with a display of atmospheric paintings and photographs.

This wasn’t advertised at the door, but the cellars contained a late 15th century hypocaust!

Complete with a Roman-style bath.

View back into the outer courtyard, toward the main gate (on the right where the people are standing)

So many views of the chateau needed their picture taken

Saint John of Nepomuk, at a bridge over the river Dyje which winds through the town of Vranov

We crossed a bridge and hiked along the paths that followed the river

View from a bridge further down river

We crossed this little suspension bridge. A couple of the braver souls went for a chilly swim and then my group of family and friends decided to walk back the way they came.

One of the group had decided that they weren’t going to walk down a road, preferring wooded paths and avoiding all the noisy, smelly traffic. Everyone went with them, everyone except the wandering werelynx. I walked back into town along the other bank.

You can see how heavy the traffic was.

In the distance, a white camper van that passed me slowly three times. They kept stopping to talk to people who were out working in their yards and gardens. I kept catching up. The last time they passed me, the driver and I joked that surely this was the last time— and it was.

Pretty little chapel

I was also passed by that jogger in the distance.

Even I had to stop and compliment the owner of this garden.

This garage is even more covered with stuff than my uncle’s garage in Oklahoma

Keep an eye on those rocks

Several meters above my head, this young roe buck was climbing

The last of the vehicles to pass me on the road. There are groups of enthusiasts who restore old American army jeeps and go out camping, dressed in fatigues.

One more, slightly different view of the chateau.

Thanks for stopping by.

As always, this is a community diary, an open thread with the sleepy pace of a werelynx who’s probably outside enjoying a romp in the first snowfall of the season. I’ll be around, with a hot cup of cocoa, eventually. Cold paws may make for extra typos. If you’re willing to put up with replies which don’t fly with the frantic energy of a winged hamster, welcome!
