Should Daily Kos have a Mastodon instance? [1]

https://joinmastodon.org ?

My first reaction is "hell, yes!". If only for their staff. And it would be helpful if they could recommend one for their users that has similar posting rules and moderation to the diaries site.

It should be possible for users (at least subscribers) to identify themselves in their profile with an HTML “a” tag with a “rel=link” (maybe it already works? I’ve not picked an instance yet). Even better, there'd be a user-friendly field that would do it for you, where you could put your Mastodon username. That's independent of dkos having an instance of its own-- even if it did, not everyone would want to use it.

Here's the thing, though. Maybe dkos shouldn't have an instance. Maybe it should be an instance. Should Daily Kos diaries, and even comments, be federated? That is, should they be shared across other sites Daily Kos chooses to federate with, and that choose to federate with it? Wouldn't that considerably further the mission of Daily Kos, where good diaries become part of the conversation across many systems, and for many more users?

Interested in your thoughts, though not so much about new closed systems that just want to be another twitter— after all that’s the site that played no small part in the events of 2016.

What's your preferred Mastodon instance? Which are you considering? Do you use Tor for protection when accessing it?
