This is the second major win of an important swing state. Michigan had new fair maps for this election as well. Democrats needed to flip just three seats to get the House and ended up taking the whole damn government.
It came down to the wire—just two seats in the Philadelphia suburbs. Democrats needed to win one of them for control—and on Thursday, they got it. Democrat Melissa Cerrato ended up 59 votes ahead of incumbent Republican Rep. Todd Stephens in one race. Stephens conceded on Thursday.
This is also a story about abortion rights. Stephens was one of the last abortion rights supporters among state Republicans, and the election was squarely focused on the issue. Stephens had relied on Democratic support to help him stay in the House, but this time around, voters knew having the majority was more important than propping up a friendly Republican.
Cerrato ran on that. “We need someone who is going to step up, do the work, and fight for the values of our community,” she told reporters. “Todd is too passive. We deserve better.” Planned Parenthood’s Pennsylvania PAC, which endorsed Stephens in 2018 and 2020, agreed. “We have been disappointed by Todd Stephens’ tenure in the legislature,” the group’s director of coordinated programs, Lindsey Mauldin, said. “This year’s election is too important to settle for semi-consistent stances on sexual and reproductive health.”
Now Democrats have another bulwark against 2024 Republican presidential shenanigans. That’s huge, and worth celebrating. But we’re not done yet with overtime. There’s still Georgia. How good will it feel to deliver one more crushing overtime blow to Republicans this year? Click that link below to make it a reality.
Help Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock over the finish line in his Dec. 6 runoff. Please give $10, $20, $50, or whatever you can to give Senate Democrats that critical 51st vote.
