Flint Hills Scissor Tail enjoying early morning sunlight of mid October.

In the early morning of October 12th I was on my way up to Wagon Trail East to visit my wife in Kansas City and happened on to a Scissor Tail doing it’s hunting sequence. It was short and sweet. Perfect...I was in a hurry. But no matter how much of a hurry you are in Scissor Tails are an urge impossible to resist.

The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.

Flint Hills of Kansas

“Just surveying the possibilities, pard.” (Birdspeak)

The Scissor Tail vaulted up from its perch on the barbed wire...

..in order to pounce on something in the tall growth along the fence line. The blurry blob low center is our Scissor Tail very rapidly doing the dirty work of hunting in close quarters. This is how those beautiful feathers become bedraggled.

Doing the dirty work worked!

“Ima fly up into this Cottonwood to eat this juicy ‘Hopper’ in private. You just toddle on along now, ya hear?” Look closer

There’s more to this October story.

I spotted a nice Red Tail that flew before I got in position for a perched shot, but it flew in an exposed sky so I got a few BIF opportunities. This as a very healthy and nicely groomed bird that just isn’t blessed with a lot of attractive color. But against a light sky this décor works great to make it more difficult to see.

Even a rather generic Red Tail exudes beauty.

This was a pretty big day. I found a couple of perched Red Tails looking so fine.

Perched on a dead branch contemplating the level of threat. Closer

This beautiful Red Tail appears to be somewhat alarmed but thinks a couple of leaves are hiding it. He seems interested in studying me. Or maybe it was just the big eye pointed at him.

At length the bird took off. I noticed its different looking horizontally striped rump patch.

The bird turned back to give me a final inspection before ducking behind a nearby tree line. This isn’t an overly flattering catch of a very beautiful bird, but it works as a fitting parting gesture.

was a HUGE day, but it will serve as the subject of two future stories. Here are a couple teasers…

A dark morph Red Tail the likes of which you may never have seen before, soon to be officially recognized (at least by me) as “Nook’s Red Tail”. Closer

Until then, let’s get the sequence of comments rolling!
