A few takeaways from the election coverage of the....red drip?

1. Less about polls & optics, more about platforms & policy. As we saw during this cycle, the polls were frequently way off. More importantly, they don’t tell voters what we need to know. X percent of voters care about gas prices? Great, now tell me what the candidates propose to do about it. Just repeating poll numbers is so freakin’ lazy. And it’s journalistic malpractice to talk about “voters’ fear of crime” without noting that crime has been plummeting for decades, and is much higher per capita in red states.
Similarly, I don’t care how the candidate dresses or whether you like their laugh. After the Fetterman-Oz debate, the media hammered endlessly on Fetterman stumbling over words a few times. But women heard loud and clear when Oz said women’s reproductive decisions should be between “her, her doctor, and local politicians,” (no, really). Speaking of which….
2. Try listening to women! The abortion referendum in Kansas should have been a clue. Even women who were on the fence about abortion were paying attention to the nightmare scenarios that are already happening. Preteen girls being ordered to have a rapist’s baby. Women with nonviable fetuses having to continue the pregnancies. Miscarriages being investigated as possible crimes. Women with potentially fatal pregnancies being refused care until they’re close to death. Women (and even young girls of “childbearing age”) being refused medication that could harm a fetus, even if they’re not pregnant. For that matter, men who care about the women in their lives care about reproductive freedom too!
3. Stop taking bad-faith culture war arguments at face value. The people yelling about “groomers” and “Critical Boogeyman Theory” don’t believe their own rhetoric. You don’t have to treat their claims as if they’re reasoned political positions. At the very least, point out that there’s nothing inherently sexual about existing while LGBT, and that Americans overwhelmingly oppose book-banning.
4. There is no “both sides” to preserving democracy!
