In 1938, Neville Chamberlain returned from Munich waving a piece of paper, declaring “Peace for our time”. In 1939, the Nazis invaded Poland. In 1940, the Tory Party changed leaders, and Churchill became Prime Minister. Britain was integral to the Allied victory in World War II. If the Party in charge then had been today’s Republicans, the Germans would have occupied the British Isles, and America would never have had a foothold in Europe to launch an attack against the Axis Powers.
The GOP lost in three consecutive elections and reacted by reelecting their thrice-failed leadership. Their big boss is still the toxic narcissist who endorsed the candidates leading to their destruction. Are there no Republicans with a spine?
They had two cracks at impeaching the malignance — the second after he incited an insurrection, leading to a mob of MAGAs breaking up their workplace, stealing their stuff, and shitting in their offices. Their reaction was world-class tut-tutting, which expired in a week. They then booked pilgrimages to the loser's lair where knees bent they kissed the ring.
A few members, who were bold enough to fight for “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” were soon gone as the Party tamped down on dissent. Number three in their House leadership, Liz Cheney, was axed for the mortal sin of truth-seeking. The only other member with the chin to fight for justice, Adam Kissinger, was similarly voted off the island.
Conservatives protest that “manhood” in America is disappearing — which is easy to believe if you keep conservative company. Leading the charge to restore what is not missing is the doughy, testicle-tanner Tucker Carlson. While the Congressional leader of the search for “real men” is Josh “Running Man” Hawley — a pathetic man with the spine of a blancmange who fled the mob he had encouraged. Churchill would have stood there, with a drink and cigar to hand, telling the rabble to “do your worst”.
After their electoral decimation and in the looming shadow of a presidential announcement, many conservative pundits, political has-beens, and wannabes took to the air to say the GOP has to move on. But Congressional Republicans changed nothing. The new boss is the same as the old boss because he is the same person.
Why are they so pusillanimous? The base. GOPers are terrified that they will lose their do-nothing jobs, their power, and the wealth of future speaking fees. Republicans do not come to D.C. to effect change. They said they do. They claim they are on a crusade to undo all the godless sins of the socialist administration, but they lie. They have as many ideas about how to replace Biden’s policies as they did to on how to replace Obamacare. None.
There are green shoots. Some Republican Governors owe nothing to Trump. Gleen Younkin won with a campaign that ignored Florida Man. And Florida Governor — and GOP heir presumptive — Ron DeSantis is his own man. I am under no illusion that either man is anything but a business-first social injustice warrior with no care for the average citizen, but they will not be caught yelling at the moon, wailing at the unfairness of it all.
The GOP picked up four seats in New York, and those winners join a GOP slate in the Mid-Atlantic and New England who ran for office free from Trumpian stain. Except for Elaine Stefanik, the soul-selling #3 in the Republican House, whose shamelessness rivals any Deep South and Desert conservative.
The only group that might switch allegiances is the billionaire donors. They took what Trump gave them in 2017. But they want to back a winner because there is no return on investing in what has become the conservative’s cryptocurrency - the petulant whiner.
There is one thing that should give Trump pause. As the legend in his own mind stepped to the microphones and droned his hour-long rationale for running a third time, no current national Republican politician attended — other than the disgraced and door-bound Madison Cawthorne. And even Ivanka and JR. took a rain check
Sic transit gloria mundi.
