Chicago Sun-Times: Workers’ rights amendment wins place in Illinois Constitution by Tina Sfondeles

The Illinois Constitution is getting a new amendment, one that guarantees workers’ rights to organize and collectively bargain for wages and other employment issues. The Associated Press on Tuesday projected the labor union-backed amendment passed by achieving a simple majority of all votes cast across the state last week, one of two roads to passage. A week ago, supporters of the workers’ rights amendment had declared victory as early as Election Night. And labor unions, the Democratic Party of Illinois and Gov. J.B. Pritzker also this week applauded passage of the amendment, which required either support from 60% of the voters weighing in on the question or a simple majority of all persons voting in the election. The measure succeeded on that latter pathway. The AP reported Tuesday that the amendment was approved by more than 50% of all votes cast on Tuesday. Of those voting “yes” or ‘”no” on the amendment itself, AP’s data showed 58.4% supporting it.

NBC News: Former President Trump launches 2024 presidential campaign by Marc Caputo and Jonathan Allen

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Donald Trump, the only president impeached twice, filed the paperwork Tuesday to launch his 2024 presidential campaign, two years after voters ousted him and a week after they rejected his hand-picked candidates in several pivotal Senate races. He is due to speak from his Mar-a-Lago resort Tuesday evening. Trump is at once the immediate front-runner for the Republican nomination and a diminished force within his party. As results rolled in from last week's midterm elections — with Democrats maintaining control of the Senate and Republicans winning a much smaller-than-expected majority in the House — some Republican elites began publicly clamoring for Trump to step aside for the good of the party. His "big lie" — that the 2020 election was stolen from him — led to an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, prompting investigations by the Justice Department and Congress that unfolded in the midst of this year's midterms.

Washington Post: Republican infighting roils Congress as midterms fallout continues by Liz Goodwin, Amy B. Wang, Marianna Sotomayor, Jacqueline Alemany, and Leigh Ann Caldwell

Republicans in both chambers of Congress mounted challenges to their leaders on Tuesday as disappointment over their lackluster performance in the midterm elections manifested in infighting and instability in the Capitol. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) won his party’s nomination for speaker Tuesday afternoon with 188 votes from the GOP caucus — well past the simple majority needed for victory. But 31 lawmakers voted for a challenger, presenting a steep obstacle for McCarthy come January, when he will need 218 votes to win the speakership when the 118th Congress convenes. And in the Senate, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) announced he would challenge Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) during an hours-long airing of grievances among party members frustrated over their failure to win back the chamber. McConnell conceded that the group’s leadership elections, set for Wednesday morning, could be delayed if a majority of the caucus votes to postpone them. “I want to repeat again — I have the votes, I will be elected,” McConnell told reporters after emerging from the party meeting. “The only issue is whether we do it sooner or later.”

New York Times: Top Trump Organization Executive Testifies Against Firm He Helped Build by Jonah E. Bromwich and Ben Protess

After decades of loyal service to Donald J. Trump, Allen H. Weisselberg on Tuesday testified in the criminal tax-fraud trial of the former president’s family business, kicking the proceedings into high gear as he assumed an uncomfortable role: star witness for the prosecution. Mr. Weisselberg, the company’s longtime chief financial officer, pleaded guilty this summer to the same crimes for which the company is now on trial in a Manhattan court. As part of his deal, which is expected to spare him a lengthy prison sentence, Mr. Weisselberg agreed to give evidence against the company, even as he remains on its payroll and has refused to implicate Mr. Trump. Mr. Weisselberg, who took the stand on the same day that Mr. Trump was expected to announce his third run for president, provided crucial facts to bolster the Manhattan district attorney’s case, which centers on lucrative off-the-books perks that the company paid to Mr. Weisselberg and other executives. The benefits — including apartment rentals, leased cars and extra cash at Christmastime — afforded them a comfortable life in an expensive city.

Guardian: Poland considers calling meeting of Nato ministers after missile strike by Dan Sabbagh, Isobel Koshiw, Lorenzo Tondo, and Ed Pilkington

Poland’s president Andrzej Duda said he expected his country would call for an emergency meeting of Nato members on Wednesday after “Russian-made” missiles strayed over into the country killing two people. The incident is the first time that the territory of a Nato country has been struck during the near nine month Ukraine war, and follows an intense 100-missile attack by Russia on Ukraine, which saw millions lose power and supply in neighbouring Moldova also disrupted. Poland would request the special consultative Nato meeting. The Polish president said he had spoken to Joe Biden, the US president, Rishi Sunak, the UK prime minister, and Germany’s Olof Scholz and told them it was “highly likely” thatwould request the special consultative Nato meeting.

BBC News: Ukraine war: Russian missiles pound major cities days after Kherson pull-out by Sam Hancock

Russia has launched one of its biggest barrages of missiles yet against Ukraine, days after its troops were forced to withdraw from Kherson. The capital Kyiv was among the cities hit, with officials saying at least one person was found dead. There were strikes across the country, from Lviv in the west to Chernihiv in the north. As well as following Russia's setback in Kherson, the attacks come as world leaders meet at the G20 in Bali. There Moscow faced fierce condemnation for the war in Ukraine. "It's clear what the enemy wants," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. "They will not get it."

DW: Italy's anti-mafia author Saviano on trial for 'defaming' PM

Italian author Roberto Saviano has gone on trial in Rome on Tuesday for calling Italy's new prime minister Giorgia Meloni a "bastard." Saviano, best known for his anti-mafia book Gomorrah, faces up to three years in prison if convicted. He made the offending remark in 2020 on a television talk show when he was asked for a comment on the death of a 6-month-old baby from Guinea. The baby boy, Joseph, was among 111 migrants rescued by the Open Arms charity ship, but died before he could receive medical attention. Meloni, who became Italy's first female prime minister last month and is leading its most right-wing government since the war, responded with legal action against the "serial hater" Saviano.

AlJazeera: Population growth slows in India as world reaches eight billion

As the global population reaches eight billion, India, formerly a powerful driver of the number of people on the planet, is experiencing a marked slowdown, according to official estimates. Falling fertility rates in the South Asian country have forced at least one state to consider reviewing policies that encouraged families not to go beyond having two children. The world’s population is estimated by the United Nations to have hit eight billion on Tuesday, with China and India accounting for more than a third of the total. India estimates its population at 1.38 billion, slightly lower than the 1.4 billion the World Bank estimates for China. India will become the most populous country in 2023, according to the UN.
