You Can "Thank" the National Democratic Committee For Sticking Us With JD Vance [1]

Tim Ryan should have won Ohio's open senate seat. Instead, the DNC helped JD Vance steal it.

This is an OPINION (mine) piece. I’m just an Ohio resident, a volunteer for GOTV, a reliable voter and one who donates more money than I should (or want to) because we have some great candidates. I have never worked for Tim Ryan’s campaign, nor do I have some insider knowledge (and if YOU do, please comment). Opinion piece-slant-rant. You’ve been warned!

I don’t know who Ohio’s Tim Ryan pissed off at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), but I can’t think of another explanation.

The DNC was so pissed that they helped stick us with the miserable excuse for a human being called JD Vance and his (fake) biography about his life.

Congressman Tim Ryan ran for the open Ohio Senate seat as a moderate Democrat who was laser-focused on Ohio workers and job loss. A great speaker and proflic fund-raiser, his campaign was stellar and Ryan was polling ahead of Vance for months. Ryan was on his way to giving Ohio two great progressive Democrats (Sherrod Brown is the other one).

Tim Ryan was good enough to sway Republican voters who couldn’t stomach the Trump-endorsed Vance.

But the DNC ignored Tim Ryan because they’ve written off Ohio.

Read that again. They’ve said Ohio is a red state now, never mind that we delivered for Obama both times and came close with Hillary.

The DNC blew it big time and in the process soured even more Ohio Democrats on our alleged national leadership. It’s an open question now whether our own party is a bigger threat to our candidates than the Republicans.

Ohio had some great candidates again this year, among them Nan Whaley running for governor against Mike Dewine who was vulnerable — he’s not popular within his own party. I suspect Nan’s campaign also got the cold shoulder from the DNC.

What about the Ohio Democratic Party, the state organization, you ask? Well, our county Democratic group has long joked about how we pay them a portion of all the donations we raise, and then they turn around and charge us to use things like Vote Builder, the database we rely on for GOTV efforts. I’d call the Ohio state party’s approach double-dipping, and as with the DNC, I suspect we got little or nothing for our money. Again.

After all, it’s the county organizations that recruit the volunteers who become poll workers, deliver yard signs, organize rallies, write postcards and stand in the cold handing out slate cards at early voting and election day (my wife and I did three shifts of this, just part of the time and money we put into every election cycle). The county parties do the work and the state HQ . . . mostly invisible is the politest thing I can say about them.

All that work and money for nothing! And it didn’t have to be that way.

It’s getting harder and harder to get good candidates to run in Ohio because our own party is now more enemy than friend. The Republicans saw an opening with Ryan’s lack of DNC support, dumped in $30 to $40 million in dark money and gave Vance’s campaign what it needed to pull out a win.

Tim Ryan deserved better. Ohio Democrats deserved better. The nation deserved better.

The state and national Democratic party have one job: get Democrats elected. They are failing miserably.
