A WALK ACROSS THE FIELDS TO THE WASTEWATER PLANT

I was doing fill-in host for Dawn Chorus and the hours had gotten on. It was sunny shiny brighty outside, even though the temperature was still in the mid-30’s. No problem, just layer up and pedal on over to the walking path. Once on the path, some distance away, I could see some frenetic aerial activity involving Ravens and what looked like a raptor, a hawk of some type, likely a Northern Harrier, given the time of year. Indeed, that’s what was happening.

Purple arrow in first frame shows the Northern Harrier. You can follow it from there.

The foregoing sequence was just one of several between the Ravens and a Harrier that I watched yesterday morning, but was the only one I was able to catch in the camera. Other catches were a bit less herky-jerky and lens-elusive. A Northern Harrier on the hunt:

Then, out loping among the cattle, a shape that called attention to itself and in a way does not belong in a cattle field. From about 400 yards distant:

Our clever friend, Coyote.

At this point in my walk I’m more than half-way to my destination of the 5.5 acre aeration/filtration settling pond at the wastewater plant. A flock of Snow Goose came in and landed in the field just off to the side of my path. I was somewhat surprised, as I walked within less than a hundred yards of them, that my presence did not seem to disturb them. They were quite placid. The Black-billed Magpie, however, was as uncooperative to posing as ever, yet persistence on my part at least partially paid off.

About twenty minutes later I was at the pond, looking for species as yet not sighted for 2022-23 winter season. Indeed!

Bufflehead Duck; first sighting of males for this winter season.

Common Goldeneye, again first sighting for 2022-23.

Not new for the season, but always a pleasure to see. American Wigeon

And again, first for this current winter season, Ruddy Duck (male, non-breeding):

Also at the pond, but I didn’t bother to specifically photograph, lots of Ring-necked Duck and the ubiquitous Mallard. Time to head on back home.

I’m happy to live down below and not up on the top of Spanish Peak, heh heh.

Now It's Your Turn.

What have you noted happening in your area or travels? As usual post your observations as well as their general location in the comments.

Thank you.
