Yes, Republicans are serious: They want him in the Senate

Herschel Walker is a terrible candidate for US Senate, maybe the worst candidate the Republicans have ever run. We know it, and Republicans know it, too. That’s why every R candidate in Georgia kept Walker at arms length before last week’s general election. But with their own races over, they are going all-in to make Walker a US Senator.

But Georgia Republicans have quickly closed ranks around Walker ahead of the runoff. The super PAC aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is teaming up with Kemp to back Walker. Kemp has agreed to share his ground data and analytics operation, which includes door-knocking and phone-banking, with the Senate Leadership Fund, a spokesperson for the super PAC confirmed. The effort will cost more than $2 million, and it’s the first time the super PAC has ever funded a ground operation, the spokesperson said. “Governor Kemp wrote the playbook for how to win big in Georgia, and we are thrilled to partner with his top-notch team to elect Herschel Walker to the Senate,” said Steven Law, president of the Senate Leadership Fund.

Adding to Kemp’s operation, the RNC is also sending in hundreds of staffers, as Fox News reports.

The Republican National Committee is sending hundreds of party officials and staffers to Georgia Monday as the runoff between Democrat incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and GOP candidate Herschel Walker gets underway, Fox News has learned. By close of business Monday, the RNC will have more than 300 staff members on the ground in the Peach State, and another 100 GOP staffers will travel to Georgia by Friday.

Walker also had some very good fundraising days. After raising $39 million for the entire general election, he has already hauled in $11 million for the runoff.

Back in 2020, Republican infighting made the runoff campaign in Georgia really hard for Republicans Perdue and Loeffler. In 2022, they will be much stronger opponents.
