Herschel Walker (R. GA)
So fucking dumb:
x Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker (R): "If we was ready for the green agenda, I'd raise my hand right now. But we're not ready right now ... What we need to do is keep having those gas-guzzling cars, 'cause we got the good emissions under those cars." pic.twitter.com/KwEIEpdg8C — The Recount (@therecount) November 14, 2022 Campaigning in Georgia on Sunday, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker said the United States is not ready to implement policies like the Green New Deal that are designed to address climate change. Instead, Walker suggested the country needs to "keep having those gas-guzzling cars" that produce "good emissions." "If we was ready for the green agenda, I'd raise my hand right now. But we're not ready right now. So don't let them fool you like this is a new agenda. This is not a new agenda," Walker said at a campaign stop in Peachtree City. "We're not prepared. We're not ready right now. What we need to do is keep having those gas-guzzling cars, 'cause we got the good emissions under those cars. We're doing the best thing that we can." The science on the causes of rising global temperatures has long been well established. Simply put, emissions from automobiles are anything but "good" for the planet. In 2021, more than 99.9% of climate scientists agreed that mankind's burning of fossil fuels is causing the global climate to warm. World leaders and their representatives are currently attending the U.N. climate conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in an effort to reach new agreements on how to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Without significant action to transition away from fossil fuels and "gas-guzzling cars," scientists have warned, the resulting climate shifts will result in catastrophic consequences, including massive migration, for life on the planet.
Democrats are already up on the air going after Walker:
A top Democratic super PAC will begin airing a new ad attacking Republican Herschel Walker’s character on Saturday, as both parties turn their focus to a Georgia Senate runoff that may end up determining control of the Senate. First provided to CNN, the ad, titled “Shown Us” from Georgia Honor – a group tied to the Senate Majority PAC, the predominant Democratic super PAC focused on Senate control – is backed by $4 million for one week of airtime, highlighting just how expensive and contentious the runoff between Walker and Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock will be. Whether or not the outcome of the Georgia runoff will determine control of the Senate is yet to be known, given that CNN projected a Democratic win in the Arizona Senate race on Friday night but has not yet projected a winner in the Nevada Senate contest. But even if Senate control is already decided, both Democratic and Republican organizations are prepared to pour money into the Georgia runoff. The Senate Leadership Fund super PAC and the National Republican Senatorial Committee have already announced plans to invest millions of dollars to turn out Walker voters ahead of the December 6 runoff. CNN projected this week that the race between Walker and Warnock would go to a runoff after neither candidate was able to get more than 50% of the vote, extending what was already one of the most expensive Senate races in the country by a month. From Labor Day to Election Day on Tuesday, Democrats and Republicans spent over $151 million solely on ads, trailing only the Senate race in Pennsylvania. The ad from Georgia Honor – a group that spent over $30 million on ads in that period – calls Walker a liar who has a “long record of violence toward women.” “Herschel Walker has shown us who he is,” a narrator says in the spot. “Herschel Walker is unfit for office.” In a 2008 interview with CNN, Walker’s ex-wife, Cindy Grossman, said that Walker had held a razor to her throat, and at one point, “he held [a] gun to my temple and said he was going to blow my brains out.” Grossman did not respond to CNN’s request for comment when CNN reported on the interview again in September 2021.
By the way, this isn’t surprising but it’s still incredibly hypocritical:
A group named Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America and its partner super PAC, Women Speak Out, announced plans Wednesday to spend at least $1 million on behalf of Walker’s campaign. If they follow through, it would bring their total Walker support to about $2 million since the Daily Beast reported that he encouraged and paid for his girlfriend to have an abortion. Walker denied that report, as well as a second woman’s allegation later that month that he paid for her abortion. Ahead of runoff elections, super PACs are required to report any expenditures greater than $1,000 within 24 hours. Women Speak Out is yet to disclose any spending on Walker’s behalf since the general election last week, according to records with the Federal Election Commission. The group has reported spending just $100 backing Walker since Oct. 22. That number should shoot up soon. Other pro-life groups have combined to spend $160,000 boosting Walker in the last month of the campaign. Most recently, the National Right to Life Victory Fund made a $57,000 ad buy on Nov. 1. Spokespeople for Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, the National Right to Life Victory Fund and a third anti-abortion group that has backed Walker in recent weeks, the National Pro-Life Alliance, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Voting in Georgia’s runoff ends on Dec. 6.
Here’s why it’s insanely important to keep Warnock in the Senate:
As Vox’s Li Zhou wrote Saturday, the split Congress does have its disadvantages but with a majority in the Senate, Democrats will be able to confirm federal court judges with a simple majority. That will provide an important counterweight to the raft of federal judges appointed by former President Donald Trump and confirmed by a Republican Senate. Supreme Court, federal district court, and circuit court judges enjoy lifetime appointments, and they have the ability to shape legal interpretation and policy for decades to come. With 116 vacancies — and 62 of those lacking nominations, Zhou wrote — Democrats can make plenty of impact over the next two years. A Democratic majority in the Senate will also retain power over which bills come to the floor for discussion — meaning they can reject approved bills from a Republican-led House, Zhou wrote. However, a GOP House can also do a fair bit of damage if it decide to conduct the investigations House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has threatened or impeach President Joe Biden and other top officials. A split Congress also probably means bitter battles over issues like funding the government and raising the debt ceiling, Vox’s Rachel M. Cohen, Dylan Scott, and Li Zhou wrote earlier this month. Should Republicans win the House, as they seem poised to do, they wrote: House Republicans are prepared to hold any increase to the debt ceiling hostage in exchange for cuts to other programs like clean energy investments and Social Security. In that case, the House and Senate could face an interminable standoff that could put the United States on the verge of defaulting on its debt, a scenario that could have devastating consequences for the economy. Those advantages will be amplified should Warnock win the runoff in December. If Warnock keeps his seat, Democrats won’t have to depend on Vice President Kamala Harris to cast a tie-breaking vote, and they would have more leverage over Sens. Joe Manchin (WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (AZ), the more conservative members of the party, in order to get legislation passed.
And here’s something else to keep in mind:
Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker has a Kemp problem: Gov. Brian Kemp, a fellow Republican who rolled to a big victory in Tuesday’s midterms, won’t be on the ballot in next month’s Senate runoff election. That’s a big issue for Walker, who should have been helped by Kemp’s presence on the ballot on Tuesday. Kemp easily topped the 50 percent threshold in his reelection effort against Stacey Abrams, while Walker finished a little more than 48,000 votes behind Sen. Raphael Warnock (D), with neither getting above 50 percent. Kemp outran Walker by 210,000 votes, putting the GOP Senate candidate behind the eight ball heading into the runoff. “Given the events of this week, he starts as an underdog,” said one GOP operative involved in the midterms, who listed Kemp’s absence as a big problem for Walker. While Kemp is not on the ticket, he is by no means sitting the race out. Last week, the governor loaned his formidable political apparatus to the Senate Leadership Fund, a group run by allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). Under the deal struck between the two sides, the governor will temporarily hand over his door-knocking, data analytics, phone-banking and microtargeting program to the McConnell group, which will bankroll the operation at a cost north of $2 million.
