NPR A crash course in organ transplants helps Ukraine's cash-strapped healthcare system BOSTON — There's a rhythm to most surgeries at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston: the beep of a heart monitor, the surgeon's calls for "scalpel ... scissors ... clamp." But today, that rhythm sounds different. It's mixed with quiet chatter in Ukrainian. The surgeon, Dr. Serguei Melnitchouk, is repairing a patient's leaky heart valve. He explains his technique to two observing doctors, both thoracic surgeons visiting from Feofaniya Clinical Hospital in Kyiv. They've traveled to Boston for a crash course in some of the most complex procedures in medicine: heart and lung transplants. Ukraine has long lacked a full-service organ transplant center. Previously, patients who needed a new set of lungs would travel abroad for the procedure, funded by the country's universal healthcare system. But that funding has been drained by Ukraine's war effort, and other countries have restricted foreigners' access to transplant services. So some Ukrainian patients are left without the chance for a life-saving transplant. The crash course at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) aims to change that. It will allow the Ukrainian doctors to open their own lung transplant center — giving patients hope for a better future, even amid the shadows of war.

Pelosi holds open option of another term as House Dem leader

WASHINGTON (AP) — With control of the House still hanging in the balance, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stayed mum Sunday on her future plans but said congressional colleagues are urging her to seek another term as Democratic leader following a strong showing in the midterm elections. Appearing in Sunday news shows, Pelosi said Democrats are “still alive” in their fight to win the chamber and that she will make a decision on whether to run for House leadership in the next couple weeks. “People are campaigning and that’s a beautiful thing. And I’m not asking anyone for anything,” she said, referring to House Democratic leadership elections set for Nov. 30. “My members are asking me to consider doing that. But, again, let’s just get through the (midterm) election.” “A great deal is at stake, because we will be in a presidential election,” Pelosi said. Over the weekend, Democrats clinched control of the Senate following Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s victory in Nevada. But in the House, a majority remains unsettled with neither party having yet reached the 218 seats needed to control the 435-member chamber.

Former Brazilian congresswoman guilty of ordering husband’s murder

A former Brazilian congresswoman has been found guilty of ordering the murder of her preacher husband and sentenced to 50 years and 28 days in prison, bringing an end to one of the most sensational crimes in recent Brazilian history. The celebrity gospel singer Flordelis dos Santos de Souza, known as Flordelis, was also found guilty on Sunday of associated crimes, including unsuccessfully attempting to poison Anderson do Carmo with cyanide at least six times before giving up and arranging his killing. Do Carmo, 42, was shot multiple times in June 2019 as he returned to the gated home they shared with their dozens of children – both biological and adopted – just outside Rio de Janeiro.Flordelis’s son Flávio was sentenced to 33 years in jail last year for pulling the trigger and his adopted brother Lucas Cezar received seven years for helping buy the murder weapon, a sentence reduced because he collaborated with police.

As world population hits 8 billion, China frets over too few babies

BEIJING/HONG KONG, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Chinese software developer Tang Huajun loves playing with his two-year-old in their apartment on the outskirts of Beijing but he said he is unlikely to have another child. Such decisions by countless people like Tang will determine the course not only of China's population but that of the world, which the United Nations says is projected to reach 8 billion on Tuesday. Tang, 39, said many of his married friends have only one child and, like him, they are not planning any more. Younger people aren't even interested in getting married let alone having babies, he said. The high cost of childcare is a major deterrent to having children in China, with many families in an increasingly mobile society unable to rely for help on grandparents who might live far away. "Another reason is that many of us get married very late and its hard to get pregnant," Tang said. "I think getting married late will definitely have an impact on births.” China was for decades preoccupied with the prospect of runaway population growth and imposed a strict one-child policy from 1980 to 2015 to keep numbers in check.

China's COVID cases rise, record daily numbers seen in Beijing and other cities

BEIJING, Nov 13 (Reuters) - China reported 14,878 new COVID-19 infections for Nov. 12, including a record number of new daily cases in capital city Beijing, as well as in manufacturing hubs Guangzhou and Zhengzhou. The new cases come as industrial activity in Guangzhou and Zhengzhou has been disrupted by restrictions aimed at controlling outbreaks. The number of daily cases in China rose from 11,950 on Nov. 11, the National Health Commission (NHC) said on Sunday. Excluding imported infections, China reported 14,761 new local cases, up from 11,803 a day earlier.
