Surface coal mining
Hi everyone. I have time to write stories again so here we go. Lots of news on the energy front and several Dkos writers have covered the changes very well as always. Hopefully this is not an unintentional repeat of a previous story. All data is from the BP Statistical Review of World Energy.
It looks like the consumption of coal has — maybe — plateaued. 2020 was strange because of Covid19 so I will ignore that drop and assume that it would have been about the same as 2019. So far 2014 was the maximum but not by much so I’m going to call coal consumption flat since 2012.
Having finally passed peak coal would be very nice but I am hesitant to make any predictions. Lets see which countries are the heavy users of coal.
Yet again China is the biggest coal consumer by far. Unfortunately coal consumption continues to rise in China, India, and other Asian countries. The plateau in world consumption is due to reductions in consumption in Europe and the United States.
OK, I forgot some info on the chart but the units are exajoules. Eventually the US and Europe are going to reduce consumption to near zero and then we can’t balance China and India anymore. Since all other countries have a very small consumption then coal burning in the future is determined by two countries. Replacing all that coal fueled electricity will be very difficult.
