Currently at the Washington Post there’s a headline Republican leadership is in a panic over their prospect of failing to take Congress in the 2022 election. It’s a noteworthy occasion because when the beltway media isn’t scared of Republicans they revere their Putin politics with coverage kid gloves.
Of course for those who belatedly pay attention to politics and the beltway media it’s even more of a coverage earthquake because an absolute favorite darling meme of the beltway media is to portray Democrats as wandering and in disarray.
Obviously an evolution of serious self-reflection is occurring in the beltway media so I’m here to help, I completely understand. I’m certainly no life master, there have been more than a few occasions in my earth journey when the conclusion huge mental precepts and behaviors had produced nothing but misery and lousy life results, just like the 2022 election results did for the Washington Post.
In your noble and admirable effort at growth and effectiveness in mission I have a name and a place for you, when you see it I’m positive more self-reflection and analysis will occur, so to the benefit of all here it is: Afghanistan.
Afghanistan was nothing but a hideous failure in 2008, but for an incredible 12 years more nothing happened but more futile death and misery for American soldiers. Why is that?
Well for one it’s a very difficult policy with many potential problems, but much more so was the fear that belligerent beltway militarism voices would loudly proclaim America was led by a coward who had cut and run. Justifiably extremely cautious of a beltway media that would ruthlessly amplify it, Presidents Obama and Trump did nothing but watch more coffins come home.
President Biden finally said enough and ordered the withdrawal, and it was a predictable mess with many mistakes and horrifying death all around. The beltway media then absolutely smashed the Biden administration day after day after day for everything that went wrong.
Two awful American journalisms dynamics were at play here, both-siderism and beltway antagonism for any Democrat.
The hideously stupid American journalism tenet to “both sides”--meaning both Republicans and Democrats are basically the same, both sides do it, so we can rationalize any lousy condition or coverage we want–has an unfortunate twist.
I will never forget some ridiculous American journalist on CBS for the 2016 election who broadcast a withering report on President Trump, an obvious con man criminal. “That was quite damning,” the anchor said in wonder. “Both sides,” was the reporter response, a glint of grim pleasure in his face.
Meaning since we just beat up Donald Trump, why, heavens above, we simply must smash up Hillary Clinton to the same level–even with a fake email story–because no one can say we don’t treat both sides the same.
So at the first opportunity of dramatic good teevee President Biden Afghanistan mistakes pummel him like we pummeled President Trump. I’m afraid I’m completely serious and correct, that’s what happened.
It became a frenzy, as Dave Roberts at Vox observed, the same pack shark behavior we saw with Al Gore who invented the internet and Hilary Clinton who betrayed the country with her email server.
Something else was in play here, astutely noted by Susie Madrack, that in the weird twisted dynamics of DC beltway media psychology Republicans are the Daddy Party to be feared and revered while beating up the Mommy Democrats is fine, they patiently and quietly take it like a good wife.
Not surprisingly this began the downward slide of President Biden’t approval ratings, only to go lower as the beltway media lit the fires and deeply banged the drums of inflation, economy, inflation economy, every day, they have the power to seriously lower approval ratings and often get giddy as they ruthlessly do it.
But…but…when Election 2022 rolled around Afghanistan was completely nonexistent as word, let alone an issue! After all that smashing coverage of negativity, why is that?
Because it was all a fake beltway media show, that’s why, it had a huge impact on our soldiers and arms dealers but few else, Americans could finally worry about domestic issues and not feel guilty for the terrible Afghanistan mistake.
A fake beltway media show precisely in the same dimension when they proclaimed election 2022 was all economy, all inflation, all the time, the Republicans will tsunami this one.
I can certainly see how this humiliating experience is a growth opportunity, Washington Post and New York Times. I’m immensely gratified describing Republicans in a panic is a certain sign of awareness and correction for your past hideous stupidity. I didn’t forget Afghanistan, but I’m sure the reminder will help you on your journey of growth and enlightenment.
