Meanwhile, President Joe Biden, speaking at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Friday, announced methane reduction measures in the US, support for Africa’s new early disaster warning systems, and a multibillion-dollar plan with Egypt that would cut 1/5th of Egypt’s power emissions with an uptick in Egyptian gas exports, the New York Times reports.

Under the initiative, Egypt will stop using 5 gigawatts worth of natural gas from its offshore fields in the Mediterranean to provide domestic electricity — a process that involves considerable methane emissions. Instead, that gas will be exported to Europe, and the United States and Germany are backing a $10 billion renewable energy plan to make up the electricity shortfall in Egypt. The plan provides for 10 gigawatts of new wind and solar energy projects that will be kick-started by a $500 million package of grants, cheap loans, and debt swaps. The United States and Germany will cover half the cost of that package. American officials say the total bill for the new renewables will eventually reach $10 billion

Biden, who was the only leader from a major polluting country to attend COP27, delivered his speech hours after climate activists rallied to demand an end to the export of fossil fuels.

x 📢 No fossil fuels here, there, or anywhere!

The Guardian reports that the first protest on Decarbonization Day at COP27 Friday demanded world leaders declare a climate emergency, keep fossil fuels in the ground, and pay loss and damage to developing nations and communities that have suffered the irreparable impacts of climate change.

Millions of people are still suffering in Pakistan after unprecedented rainfall and floods left a third of the country under water earlier this year. “We are paying for the crimes of corporations and the global north, who have made Pakistan a hub for climate disasters,” said one protester, Farooq Tariq. “We don’t want any more words, we want debt suspension, we want reparations, we want climate justice.”

Conference attendees were again disappointed that the United States did not overtly pledge any funds to help developing countries deal with loss and damage from climate change related disasters.

x At the @UNFCCC words matter. #LossandDamage is a legal term. Losses and damages is an @IPCC_CH which is a broader term. Whatever Biden is talking about we will find out eventually but probably not with smiles from the Global South. https://t.co/65yq6ewPxG — Adrian Martinez🐢 (@adrianmb_cr) November 11, 2022

x "This kind of funding is called #LossAndDamage, and it is meant to address climate impacts that people can’t simply adapt to. The concept may seem wonky, but it’s not: Loss has a name. Damage has an address." ~ @AniDasguptaWRI

COP27 & Health: World Leaders Must Deliver Plans for Fossil fuel Phase-out and Climate Finance “In Sharm El-Sheikh, governments must also commit to a deadline for full and just fossil fuel phase-out as a public health imperative, and define how this will be delivered”, said Miller. “Only a full phase out of fossil fuels will deliver the health benefits of cleaner air and protect people from the harm to their health caused by the extraction, transport, processing and burning of oil, gas and coal.” In September 2022, the Global Climate and Health Alliance, which brings together over 130 health organisations from around the word to tackle climate change and to protect and promote public health, joined the World Health Organization and over 200 health organizations in calling on governments to urgently develop and implement a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty to end global dependence on fossil fuels, in order to protect the health of people around the world.
