First Bank of Twitter

I’ve been reading posts here and elsewhere about the chaos at Twitter and laughing along. Then I read the above article. *

The article refers to an all-staff meeting for Twitter employees that Musk held Thursday. According to the article, in response to a employee’s question, Musk responded by

[D]irecting staff to envision a Twitter that works more like a financial institution, where digital payments are sent as easily as direct messages, creators can get paid more than they would on platforms like YouTube, and average users can generate higher interest on payments accounts held right there on Twitter. “That’s definitely a direction we’re going to go in, enabling people on Twitter to be able to send money anywhere in the world instantly and in real time,” Musk confirmed, detailing plans to link debit cards to Twitter accounts and even issue checks to users so they can pay rent from their Twitter accounts.

I found these statements revelatory. Musk doesn’t see Twitter’s future as providing information. He sees it as a place to sell content. And to handle all the money. (To think in Amazon terms, it would be as if Amazon sells product and is the bank, too, managing all the money involved in all transactions.)

I have no idea if this will work or if it is legal. But the scope leaves me breathless and it is truly visionary.

Also explains what is currently happening. Musk doesn’t care about current Twitter information providers. He doesn’t care about businesses that use Twitter for customer care or about individuals who use Twitter to keep in touch with friends, business, and agencies, or about Governments who use Twitter to inform their constituents. Because what Musk wants is content that someone charges for and someone else pays for. And he wants a piece of each payment, and, by the way, to manage all the money that flows through the platform.
