Pandemic Observations -- November 9, Top 40+ Nations (The China Conundrum): [1]

The Road Ahead?

In my last update on the international aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic five weeks ago, it looked like Europe was in the early stages of a significant new surge of cases. Fortunately that seems to have fizzled out fairly quickly, and new weekly cases there are already down to less than half of where they were then (at least for the most part). Globally, weekly new cases have declined from over 3 million to less than 2.5 million, though the weekly death toll still seems stuck in the 10-11,000 range.

One curiosity that emerged in the data with this week’s stats is that the cumulative total of covid cases in the US as reported by www.worldometers.info/… apparently grew by an additional 165,000 beyond the 220,000 actually accounted for by a comparison with last week’s stats. Normally this results from one or more of the larger states significantly revising their historical record, but so far I haven’t been able to identify any such revision at the state level, so it remains a mystery at this point.

The real story this week though is the return of China to these tables, despite their continued adherence to a zero-covid policy that continues to use draconian lockdown measures to try and stamp out each and every outbreak as it emerges. China is currently seeing its most significant surge of new cases since the March-May outbreak that shut down Shanghai for months on end, though this time Guangzhou, Beijing, and Inner Mongolia appear to be the primary hotspots.

The next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether China can once again contain a dangerous new outbreak the way they have in the past, or whether this will be the final straw that eventually breaks the back of their increasingly futile efforts to maintain a zero-covid policy ad infinitum, regardless of the social and economic costs.
