Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Joseph Streeter assigned to the Marine Corps Band in Quantico, Va., plays Taps at a flag raising ceremony on the overlook of World Financial Building 2. U.S. Coast Guard photo by Tom Sperduto.
Thanks to President Joe Biden’s presidency, and his sane leadership handling the pandemic that started under the watch of his awful predecessor, musical ensembles are starting to get back to normal.
For the United States Marine Band, the President’s Own, that includes touring the nation and teaching young players. Dawn Miller for TAP into Milltown/Spotswood:
SPOTSWOOD, NJ - Members of the Memorial Middle School seventh and eighth grade band got a rare opportunity last week to participate in a clinic run by members of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. ... "The President's Own" United States Marine Band is currently involved in a tour of the Northeast and is holding free performances in New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. Last week [article was published on October 31, 2022], the Marine Band held a concert at the Joanne Magistro PAC at Hammarskjold Upper Elementary School in East Brunswick. The October 27 performance from the 58-member band, ... was a huge hit with audience members. "These world-class musicians offer free clinics to local schools the morning after they perform in the area," said Memorial Middle School Music, Choral and Band Director Christina Restine said. ... Three band members along with Associate Conductor, First Lt. Darren Lin, visited the Memorial Middle School last Friday. Marine Band members included Gunnery Sgt. Tessa Gross (oboe), Staff Sgt. Angelo Quail (clarinet), and Gunnery Sgt. Amy McCabe (principal trumpet). [...] The clinic was interactive for Memorial's student musicians. First, Lin had each of the Marine Band musicians play a demonstration before leading the students in a counting exercise. Then, Restine, her student teacher and the Marine Band musicians played a piece the students had been working on in band. "The students had their chances to play as well with the point of this part of the clinic being to work on playing expressively," Restine said. "This is one of the core concepts I work on with the seventh and eighth graders and I requested it be the central topic of the session. After working with the students for about 15 minutes, the students and adults did breakout sessions where each Marine worked with the students who played their instruments." "It was amazing to see the faces of the percussionists when First Lt. Lin performed an expert snare drum roll and hear the trumpets improve after Gunnery Sgt. McCabe helped them with their high notes," Restine continued. "By the end of the session when the students performed the entire piece without the aid of the adults, there was a noticeable difference in their expression."
As someone who has taken a basic percussion class, I can tell you that the snare drum is a much more difficult instrument than one might think. I really like the snare drum solo in Sousa’s march “Semper Fidelis,” titled after the Marine Corps motto.
Here’s an interesting piece that maybe they wouldn’t have played for classified documents salesman Donald Trump. I sure didn’t expect to learn about Tito Guízar from the United States Marine Band.
And given that today’s the 247th birthday of the Marine Corps,
Jacques Offenbach sure would have been surprised to hear his melody for a pair of cowardly cops transformed into a solemn and noble hymn for brave Marines.
The open thread question: What’s your favorite recording by the United States Marine Band?
