During Día de Los Muertos in Uvalde, Texas, families and friends commemorated those who have died due to a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School; the school shooting was the deadliest in Texas history. Stuffed animals, marigolds, and the prized possessions of their children adorned altars. Before then, families of the children who died marched towards the Texas Capitol, advocating for change.
But despite the grieving families’ tireless advocacy for stricter gun laws, voters in Uvalde County have decided to re-elect Greg Abbott (R) as Texas governor. As of this writing, Greg Abbott won 4,027 votes, or 60.27 per cent of the vote, whilst Beto O’Rourke (D) won 3,031 votes, or 38.38 per cent of the vote, making it a margin of just less than 22 points.
x Uvalde families are disappointed after learning Greg Abbott has won re-election. Some are hurt that Uvalde County decisively voted for Abbott. pic.twitter.com/cQQykk2imD — Uriel J. García (@ujohnnyg) November 9, 2022
x The fact that Uvalde still voted red after the lack of action and empathy from greg while Beto made every effort to show his support for that county baffles me. The poor families of the children that died I can’t imagine their pain right now — Rae ❄️ (@Adriannaa_rae) November 9, 2022
We have a long journey ahead if we are going to make Texas a purple state. Rural Texas is already a problem for Democrats, but many Texas suburbs are also a tough nut to crack. For example, take Harris County, which contains 99 per cent of the city of Houston in addition to numerous suburban areas. In her race for county judge, Lina Hidalgo (D) squeaked past ardent right-winger Alexandra Mealer (R) by 16,000 votes. Congressmen Dan Crenshaw (R, TX-2) and Wesley Hunt (R, TX-38) have won their races with no less than 63 per cent of the vote. Not to mention, Brian Babin (R, TX-36) won the Harris County portion of his district with at least 60 per cent of the vote. Furthermore, if Abbott voters in Harris County were their own county, they would have more people than all but 12 Texas counties.
