Here’s mine: Question one in Massachusetts would impose an additional 4% tax on income over $1 million a year. That would affect 0.6% of households in Massachusetts and create an additional $2 billion in annual revenue—money that would be directed, by the terms of the amendment, to education and transportation funding.
This is personal to me, and not just because I believe in taxing the rich and funding education and transportation. Not just because I’m raising a child in the state. It’s personal to me because my late father devoted quite a bit of time and passion in the last years of his life to getting this onto the ballot. In 2018, after the signatures had been gathered, the state supreme court disqualified it, so my dad didn’t see it come to a vote. But union activists and other advocates didn’t give up: They found another way to get it onto the ballot through the state legislature. My father couldn’t be here to strategize and organize and canvass with so many of his dear friends who have taken leading roles in pushing this forward, but a win for question one would still feel like a win for him, and I want that very much.
As of this writing, the yes vote leads by around 3.5 percentage points with a reported 84% of the vote in. And I am anxiously surveying what cities and towns haven’t yet reported their results, looking up demographic information, and scanning the map to try to guess where they might land. I’m cautiously optimistic, but won’t relax until this is final.
So how about you? Are you waiting on a state legislative race or a local district attorney or sheriff? Another ballot measure? Just biting your fingernails hoping for that sweet, sweet Boebert loss? Unable to focus on anything but control of the Senate?
