The Oregonian has called the governor’s race for Democrat Tina Kotek. There are tens of thousands of more votes to count, but the largest chunk, thought to be about 80,000 ballots, are from Multnomah county, which includes Portland and where Kotek was winning by a whopping 51% of the vote. The GOP’s opponent, Christine Drazen, will also pick up votes from more Republican counties, but the Oregonian calculates that Drazen will not close the current 30,000 vote gap.

The polling for this race earlier in October consistently showed Independent Betsy Johnson picking up over 10% of the vote; however, many Democratic voters appeared to have come home, and Johnson is currently only taking 8.8% of the vote.

Another important factor in this race is that young voters in Oregon turned out, if TargetEarly’s statistics are indicative of the final turnout. Unlike in many other states, the early youth vote was comparable to 2018.

I want to congratulate Oregon Democrats on winning this important race—especially my young niece and nephew, who energetically drummed up the vote among their cohorts.
