There was an election. There was not a Red Wave. Nor was there a Blue Tsunami. Considering what climate change is doing to sea level rise, perhaps it’s time we retire all those flooding metaphors, anyway?
All of this is being covered very thoroughly elsewhere, so I’ll simply note that:
- Dems have a strong path to holding the Senate and even moving up to 51 seats (a relief for Kamala Harris!)
- Dems have a very narrow but still quite possible path to holding the House! And neither party is likely to have a majority of more than a fistful of votes, which will make life very interesting regardless. Just imagine: In addition to a Senate circumscribed by Manchin and Sinema, we’ll have a House circumscribed by several DOZEN Manchins and Sinemas, each making petty little demands and threatening to gum up the works if they don’t get their way!
I’m glad we managed to eke through climate legislation (aka “The Inflation Reduction Act”) while we had the chance. I doubt much major legislating will transpire in the next two years.
Slava Ukraini!
In other news, Russia announced it will NOT be holding the line in Kherson, and instead will withdraw all its forces to more defensible positions across the Dnipro River.
This should be… interesting.
In his nightly address, the Ukrainian president warned that the "enemy does not bring us gifts" and suggested that Moscow's retreat from Kherson could be a ruse to lure Ukrainian forces to advance into a battle in the strategically important city. ...The regional capital was seized by Russia early in the war and if confirmed, the withdrawal from Kherson will mark one of Moscow's most significant retreats. However, other Ukrainian officials and Western allies have also cast doubt over the intentions behind Moscow's announcement and what it could mean. x But what is happening? We've seen some UAF advances 👍 but not a complete withdrawal by Russia, a slow retreat with spoiler rearguard action? — MIon Eusk (MatelotJim) (@ExMatelotJim) November 9, 2022 x Actions speak louder than words. We see no signs that Russia is leaving Kherson without a fight. A part of the ru-group is preserved in the city, and additional reserves are charged to the region. 🇺🇦 is liberating territories based on intelligence data, not staged TV statements. — Михайло Подоляк (@Podolyak_M) November 9, 2022 x "And winter is coming..."
"Yep, let's move across the river. It'll provide natural barrier to those pesky Ukrainians"
"And winter is coming..."
"Wait, why is the river covered with... ice?" — Jeremy Bloom (@jeremybloom) November 10, 2022
It’s a very good thing that Florida voted for all those Republicans yesterday. Because tomorrow they’re going to really need help, and we all know how compassionate, caring, and gosh-darned hard working the GOP is! DeSantis has some extra-special tax cuts planned for all the rich people impacted by the impending hurricane…
Meanwhile, a storm of a different color has been rocking the crypto world. So sad…
Bitcoin's price fell as low as $15,625 Wednesday. It was the first time the largest cryptocurrency has fallen below $16,000 since November 2020. The BTC price was down 14% on the day, the biggest plunge in almost five months. ...Binance on Tuesday said it would buy the billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX after what appeared to be a severe run on deposits but backed out on Wednesday afternoon citing "mishandled funds and alleged U.S. agency investigations." ...CoinDesk reported previously that the balance sheet of Alameda Research, also under Bankman-Fried's control, was heavily weighted toward the FTX exchange's own token, FTT – signaling billions of dollars of exposure for which there might not be ample buyers, and thus prone to steep losses in the event of a sell-off. x BREAKING: Binance has reached an agreement to acquire embattled nation El Salvador and is rebranding to El Binanco — litquidity (@litcapital) November 9, 2022
