Sweet Potatoes vs. Yams (h/t annieli)

How do you sweet potato? Or do you yam?

Many times the names "sweet potato" and "yam" are used interchangeably in conversation, in cooking, and even at the supermarket, but they are really two different vegetables. Although they are both root vegetables, they belong to two different plant families—the sweet potato is from the morning glory family [genus Ipomoea] while the yam is related to the lily. Yams are starchier and less sweet than the sweet potato and can grow much larger. ✂️ Sweet potatoes [...] are thought to have originated in Central or South America and are popular in the American South and available across the globe. ✂️ The true yam is the tuber of a tropical vine (Dioscorea batatas) and is not even distantly related to the sweet potato. It's a popular vegetable in African, Latin American, and Caribbean markets, with over 150 varieties available worldwide, and slowly becoming more common in the United States. www.thespruceeats.com/...

Sweet potatoes can be used in as simple or as complicated a recipe as you wish.

Simplicity itself: Sometimes I’ll bake an extra sweet potato. The next day, I peel and flatten it somewhat & saute in butter until it’s kinda crispy on both sides, then give it a shot of hot sauce. Yum!

Hi! I’m Itzl!

As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!

IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
