Democracy trumps all other issues [1]

The issue that motivates me most in this election is the immediate threat to our democracy. Let me explain.

When I vote in a national election, I vote on issues that those who represent us can have an immediate and major impact on. Democracy is one such issue.

Inflation is important of course. But seriously - do you really think who is elected senator or governor is going to make much difference on that issue?

Concerned about immigration? Of course I am. But anybody with a sense of enlightenment about that issue understands that the only way to solve that is to develop a comprehensive immigration policy that protects dreamers and not rile up the electorate about some phony caravan.

Crime is an issue, but that is going to be solved at the local level more than in any way by Congress or the state.

Yes, my biggest issue is democracy. Republicans are trying to destroy it and Democrats are trying to preserve it. Republicans are reflecting a fear in white America about the shifting demographics in our country. Minorities are rightfully becoming more powerful as their percentage of the population grows. Republicans are moving away from majority rule.

There are several other issues that are right up there with democracy as crucial to the future of America - climate change and Social Security/Medicare come to mind. Our Senators and Governor certainly impact those in a major way - far more than they impact inflation or jobs.

But if democracy is dismantled and the country turns to authoritarian rule, none of the other issues will matter. What you and I think will never again impact national policy because we will have forfeited our ability to participate.
