I live in Michigan. We have a ballot proposal (Proposal 3) that would enshrine the right to bodily autonomy and freedom of reproductive choice into the state constitution as a fundamental right. And lately, I keep seeing these yard signs that say “Fight Like Heaven...Vote NO on Prop 3.” ...Fight like Heaven? Really?

I find it fascinating that people would so brazenly display a sign that makes their real intention in opposing Prop 3 crystal clear: they want to impose their personal religious beliefs on everyone. Why else would they invoke a religious idea (heaven) against a ballot proposal? Why would you say “Fight like Heaven” if you were not intending to invoke your religion?

There is no universal belief about when life begins; that belief is personal, and every person is entitled to believe what they choose about it. If you believe life begins at conception, then you shouldn’t have an abortion; that is (and should be) your choice. But you don’t get to make that choice for anyone else. Once you start trying to force others to live by your personal beliefs, you’ve crossed into dangerous territory. And if you are brazen enough to declare that it’s your personal religious beliefs you want to force everyone to follow, you’ve crossed into wholly unconstitutional territory. (Given the current makeup of SCOTUS, I know that argument would not sway a majority of the justices on the subject of abortion. But I don’t think that invalidates the argument; it illuminates the biases and agendas of the current majority justices.)

I could go on and on about all the ways that our society still devalues and oppresses women (and pretty much everyone who is not a white, straight, cisgender male), but I’ll save that for another time. I will conclude instead with the best sign I’ve seen since Roe was overturned earlier this year: “Not Your Incubator.” To me, that sums it up the best.
