The European Union has just passed the Digital Markets Act which will force Apple to allow sideloading third party apps on iPhones, iPads and IOS. The new law comes into effect in May next year.
The EU has already forced Apple to dispense with their Lightning connector and adopt USB-C which will speed up data transfers significantly. The Lightning connector in that respect is the same as USB 2.0 with data transfer speeds of only 480Mbps compared with USB-C 3.2 at 20Gbps.
Here’s a list taken from the EU site detailing what app stores a.k.a. Gatekeepers can and cannot do anymore once the DMA comes into force.
Will the US follow suit I wonder?
