Ambrose at around 12 years old
20 years ago today, November 3, 2002, my mom and I went for a walk, and when we got back home, a little orange kitten ran out of our bushes toward us. I said, Oh! It's a little kitty!" He let me pick him up, so I knew he must have been around humans before. He was not even skittish.
He let me carry him as I went up and down the street, asking if anyone was missing a kitten, and no one knew where he came from. (I didn't know he was a boy yet, but I thought he might be.)
Being a tiny kitten- when we took him to the vet in the next day or so, they said he was around eight weeks old- he could not have gone far on his own. Once I had asked pretty much everyone within a couple blocks, my family and neighbors concluded he was probably dropped off by someone who didn't want kittens.
My mom hoped he would turn out to be a girl, because she always wanted a cat named Amber, but he was indeed a boy. I knew of the name Ambrose, and said that would be kind of like Amber, so we named him Ambrose.
Ambrose as a kitten
He became my kitten, and Mandy acted to the best of her ability as a mother cat to him, and Maurice, Mira, and Licorice helped.
They did a good job. He grew up to be a very smart and handsome cat. He was the best mouser, very athletic. (They were and are all indoor cats, but mice get in here.)
Maurice and Mandy, who acted as his adoptive feline parents
He lived almost 16 years, which some people think is a long time for a cat, but in his youth and middle age he was strong and robust enough I really would have thought I'd be celebrating this 20th Ambrose Day with him sitting on my lap purring. I do feel his presence with me often. So do the other cats, I am very sure.
It was 2018 when he crossed the rainbow bridge, but I do still expect to see him sitting on my bed or on a chair. And sometimes I swear I do, for a second here and there.
He was always such an awesome cat, and memory of him is always a comfort. He had the most amazing personality, and looked so wise from the time he was a baby. He was definitely smart, and funny, too. He actually loved to pose for the camera.
I wanted to share with you this 20th anniversary of this special day. I know Ambrose would like that.
